Dendrochronology! …is the study of tree ring
patterns to uncover stories about the past. This scientific
method can provide answers to key historical questions.
Is the Wanton-Lyman-Hazard house really the oldest in Newport?
Why does Aquidneck Island architecture differ from the rest
of New England? How did the building trades develop in Rhode
Island?
The Newport Restoration Foundation has launched an exciting
project to compare rings from Rhode Island’s oldest
trees with samples from among the region’s historic
houses. This master chronology will provide a valuable tool
for historic house owners, museums & historians.
